OpenAI’s legal push offers specialist providers distribution—and a potential gatekeeper
OpenAI wants to power legal AI companies’ products—and give lawyers more reasons to stay in ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s Astra for Law combines GPT‑6 Astra with legal search and tools, initially for selected firms through ChatGPT and Codex. Planned API access will let partners build it into their own products, while Thomson Reuters is previewing a forthcoming CoCounsel Legal connector for ChatGPT. OpenAI says its search complements licensed specialist content. For specialist publishers, the opportunity is wider distribution; the risk is that ChatGPT becomes where lawyers choose and use their services, weakening the direct customer relationship.
